Reduce energy use to save electricity and money.

The weather affects your electric bills more than any other factor in the summer and winter. When it's very hot or cold, your heating and air system uses more energy to keep your home comfortable and raises your energy bills.

At MTE, we want to help our members use energy wisely. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative owned by our members, MTE residential members pay electric rates more than 25% below the national average.

But our low rates don't prevent high bills. The best way to reduce your monthly bill is by improving your energy use habits, reducing how often your heating and air system runs, and taking advantage of our programs and services. We want to help you use less electricity.

We'd love to help you make smarter energy choices and stay comfortable.

Energy Details

This feature lets you see how much energy you use, broken down by category. You can look at and compare your energy use across different billing periods over a year. You can choose to see the data in different categories and present it as either a bar chart or in a stacked layout.

Bill Analysis

The "Bill Analysis" feature and other features can be accessed under the "Usage" tab in the main menu. This tool allows you to compare your current bill with last month's, showing you the total cost and any changes as percentages. If there's a particular reason for the price change, it will show why.

Projected Bill

This useful tool allows you to view the projected amount of your bill at the end of the billing cycle based on your current energy usage habits. If you want to stick to a specific budget, you can use this information to lower the projected bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

The greater the difference between the outdoor temperature and the temperature of your thermostat setting, the harder your HVAC system must work to maintain indoor temperatures. Heating and cooling account for more than half of a member's electric bill on average. Your HVAC unit runs longer during prolonged periods of cold or hot weather to keep the thermostat’s temperature constant.

Increasing your thermostat by 3 degrees in the summer can save 3-6% on cooling costs. The same saving can occur when you lower it by 3 degrees in the winter.

To monitor your usage during peak winter or summer temperature periods or at any time, you can create an online account at mte.com/myMTE or download our app, myMTE.

Due to inflation and an increase in costs associated with electric infrastructure, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and MTE adjusted the energy-charge portion of rates upward on Oct.1, 2023. Prior to this, MTE hadn’t had a rate increase to benefit our own revenues in 15 years.

As a not-for-profit organization, Middle Tennessee Electric strives to keep our rates as low as possible for our members. As a result, MTE’s residential rates rank among the lowest in the nation - more than 25% below the national average.

MTE purchases virtually all our power from TVA, and about 80 cents of every dollar collected by MTE is paid to TVA for the power used by our members. The remaining 20 cents is used to operate the cooperative.
