What is a modernized grid?
The grid is MTE’s network of transmission lines, substations, transformers, and other equipment that helps deliver electricity from TVA’s power plants to homes and businesses.
MTE’s electric grid has been improved over many decades as technology has advanced. Grid modernization is the next step. It uses advanced electrical distribution technology to help parts of the system work together in smarter, faster, and more efficient ways.

A modern grid connects electrical distribution equipment with communication technology. This allows different parts of the system to share information and respond more quickly when conditions change.
Communication across the grid is important because it enables equipment to work together as a connected system. MTE’s broadband network connection supports this long-term grid modernization work.

What makes a modernized grid special?
A modernized grid can help identify problems faster and reroute power when possible. In the past, some widespread outages could take hours to locate and repair. With modern grid technology, some issues may be isolated much more quickly.
Some members may still experience an outage, but others who would have been affected by the same outage may only notice a brief blink as power is rerouted through another path.

A smarter grid also helps MTE manage electricity from different generation sources, including TVA, large-scale solar farms, and member-owned solar PV systems.
Rates and project timeline
Will grid modernization cause rates to go up?
No. MTE makes system improvements each year while working to keep rates low for members. As a not-for-profit cooperative, MTE is focused on being a good financial steward of member resources.
Grid modernization does have a cost, but MTE works to reduce it through improved efficiencies and careful implementation.
When will MTE complete grid modernization?
Grid modernization is ongoing. MTE has completed the rollout of its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system and continues to add grid automation and control across the electric system.
MTE is the second largest electric distribution cooperative in the country and the largest in the Tennessee Valley region. Our service area covers more than 2,100 square miles and includes more than 15,000+ miles of energized line. Fully integrating the grid across substations, businesses, and homes will take time.
