What is the ROW Contractor Network?
MTE helps members prepare for new power line construction by maintaining a network of licensed and insured contractors. These professionals are screened to perform right-of-way (ROW) clearance work that meets MTE’s quality, safety, and service expectations. The ROW Contractor Network provides members with a place to start when seeking qualified help with tree trimming and vegetation management needs related to new power line construction.

As a convenience to our members, MTE maintains a list of licensed and insured contractors who are qualified to perform right-of-way clearance to MTE standards.
How contractors are screened
Contractors in the ROW Contractor Network must meet specific requirements before they are approved. Contractors who do not meet these standards may be suspended or removed from the network.
Licensing and certification
Contractors must:
- Have been in business for at least one year.
- Maintain all required licenses.
- Hold an active business license.
- Maintain Line Clearance Certification.
Insurance
Contractors must:
- Carry at least $5 million in general liability insurance.
- Meet state requirements for workers’ compensation insurance.
- Provide written acknowledgment from the state if they are exempt from workers’ compensation insurance requirements.
Performance standards
Contractors must:
- Follow MTE quality guidelines and clearance requirements.
- Demonstrate quality work.
- Provide excellent member service.
- Use well-maintained equipment.
- Present themselves professionally.
- Respond promptly to member concerns.
- Honor warranties.
Safety and service commitment
For member safety, ROW Contractor Network vendors do not perform vegetation maintenance within 20 feet of existing power lines. This follows MTE’s safety requirements.
Each contractor is solely responsible for the services they provide. MTE screens and approves contractors for the network, but MTE does not guarantee their work or assume liability for their services.
Frequently asked questions about the ROW Contractor Network
Are members required to maintain right-of-way clearance for existing power lines and equipment?
No. MTE’s Vegetation Management team and contractors perform tree trimming on a rotating schedule across our service territory. Members are required to conduct the initial right-of-way clearance for new power line construction.
How does MTE select contractors for the network?
MTE screens contractors based on licensing, insurance, experience, and performance standards to help members find qualified contractors.
Can I hire a contractor who is not on the network list?
Yes. Members may select any contractor. However, only contractors in the ROW Contractor Network have been screened by MTE.
What should I do if I have a concern about a contractor’s work?
Contact the contractor directly to resolve the concern. If the issue continues, notify MTE so the contractor’s status in the network can be reviewed.
Are contractors responsible for damages?
Yes. Each contractor is solely responsible for their services and any resulting damages.
