Outdoor Lighting Basics
What kind of outdoor lights does Middle Tennessee Electric offer?
We offer both streetlights and outdoor yard lights for our members. Each category contains options to meet your needs.
What’s the difference between a yard light and a streetlight?
Streetlights are typically paid by a government or HOA entity, while outdoor yard lights are reserved for member residences or businesses.
What are the specifications for outdoor lights?
Outdoor light performance varies based on location, height, weather conditions, and other factors. Three of the basic options we offer are single, single-directional, and bi-directional yard LED lights. If you would like more information, please reach out to us.
Placement and costs
Are there restrictions for outdoor light placement?
Yes. Many areas have laws or ordinances on where lights can be placed. If you need details about local restrictions, reach out to your homeowners association or local government.
In addition to local regulations, your outdoor light must meet MTE standards for placement on your property. Our engineering team can evaluate your property to determine the best placement for an outdoor light and help reduce costs.
Is there a cost for outdoor lighting?
Yes. As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, members are financially responsible for certain costs related to outdoor lights on their property. Rates and charges are available at mte.com/Rates.
Adding lighting may require additional infrastructure or upgrades to existing equipment, which can increase installation costs. For example, we may need additional utility poles, a larger transformer, or more wiring to support a lighting request. Our engineering team determines the construction costs for these changes and communicates them before work is done.
