MTE’s EV Ready incentive helps members prepare for convenient Level 2 electric vehicle charging at home. The incentive is available to members who install a 240-volt service for a Level 2 EV charger of any brand. These frequently asked questions explain what may qualify, what type of installation is recommended, and when to contact MTE for more information.
EV Ready incentive eligibility
What is the EV Ready incentive?
The EV Ready incentive is available to MTE members who install a 240-volt service for any Level 2 electric vehicle charger at home. This includes chargers from all brands, not just Tesla or ChargePoint.
Can I qualify if my car came with a 240-volt plug, and I only need an outlet?
Yes. Many EVs come with a 240-volt plug that connects directly to a wall outlet, similar to a dryer plug. You do not need a wall-mounted charger to qualify.
Can I qualify if I installed an outlet earlier this year?
Yes. Members may qualify as long as the outlet or wall charger was installed within the past 12 months and the application includes a receipt dated within the past 12 months.
Installation questions
Is there a minimum service size required?
MTE recommends a 50-amp service. The incentive specifies a 50-amp outlet to help ensure members have enough charging capacity for future needs.
Can I hardwire my charger instead of installing an outlet?
Yes. Members who hardwire their charger can still qualify for the credit. Additional details and review may be needed based on your specific situation.
Can I install the charger myself?
Working with a 50-amp, 240-volt service is dangerous and should be done by a licensed professional in accordance with local codes. MTE assumes no liability for installation.
Level 3 charging
Why does MTE incentivize Level 2 chargers but not Level 3?
Level 3 chargers require about 50 kW of capacity and a 480-volt service. They are not compatible with residential electrical systems and are much more expensive to install.
