Members and businesses may also use smaller battery storage systems to support their own energy needs, especially when paired with solar or other energy technology. Whether used by MTE or by a member, battery storage can help shift energy use to a better time and support a more flexible electric grid. 

What is a battery energy storage system? 

A battery energy storage system stores electricity for later use. For MTE, that means charging the system when energy demand and costs are lower, then using the stored energy during peak demand periods when electricity costs are higher. 

For members and businesses, smaller battery storage systems can serve a similar purpose on a smaller scale. They can store energy for later use and help support personal, home, or business energy goals. While the size and setup may differ, the basic idea is the same: the BESS holds electricity until it is needed. 

How MTE uses battery storage 

Our battery storage energy systems help MTE reduce monthly wholesale electricity purchases during peak demand hours. This is done through a process called energy time-shifting for distributed generation. 

With energy time-shifting, a BESS charges when TVA rates are lower during low-use hours. It can then discharge energy when demand costs are higher. This helps MTE use energy stored during lower-cost times instead of buying more electricity during higher-cost peak periods. 

How members benefit 

MTE members benefit because our BESS helps the cooperative manage energy costs more effectively. By charging the system during off-peak periods and using that stored energy during peak demand, MTE can reduce costs associated with higher on-peak energy demand. 

MTE's BESS helps the cooperative save tens of thousands of dollars annually. These savings are then used to improve affordability and reliability for our members.

A common use case for smaller battery systems is to support PV solar systems. These solar arrays often use battery technology to store energy during the day for use at night or on low-production days.
